Media and academics: how to be the 'go-to' contact

12 November 2012

Come and hear broadcaster Angela Catterns when she joins Professor Simon Chapman, Associate Professor Danielle Celermajer and Dr Richard Miles to talk about how academics can get their message across in the mainstream media.

Panellists will examine the benefits of interacting with media from the academic’s perspective as well as providing tips and advice from industry experts such as Angela, whose perceptive interviewing technique has been described as the “perfect combination of intellect and personality”.

Professor Chapman has had experience with the media as a highly influential participant in developing Australia’s world-leading policy for the plain packaging of cigarettes. Dr Celermajer, who is director of the Master of Human Rights in the Faculty of Arts, will talk about using media to promote the new coursework masters degree at the University. Dr Miles, who works in the University's Department of Classics and Ancient History, was the presenter of the six-part BBC documentary Ancient Worlds. He will discuss how he makes ancient history relevant to a contemporary audience.

For catering purposes, please RSVP as soon as possible to mediaoffice@sydney.edu.au.
