THE REVOLUTION IN ACADEMIC NETWORKS IN THE 21st CENTURY

19 August 2014

Co-presented with the University of Sydney Association of Professors

It used to be commonplace that a 'gold standard of scholarship' existed across British and overseas universities, very much sustained by an elite professorial academic networks. Traditional roles of Professors and former academic networks are now disappearing along with institutional expansion and changing patterns of student access. New networks and alliances are developing apace, while governments increasingly regulate higher education and research priorities.

What are the roles of university professors in sustaining scholarly standards and quality across research and teaching? A panel of academics discusses the opportunities they see ahead.

This controversial topic will be the focus of a panel discussion on the occasion of the Australian launch of a major new book reflecting on the changing nature of universities – Universities for a New World: Making a global network in international higher education, 1913–2013 (edited by Deryck M Schreuder)

Panellists:

  • Dr Julia Horne is University Historian at the University of Sydney. She has published widely on Australian cultural and social history including the history of landscape, travel and tourism, and the history of higher education.

  • Dr Tamson Pietsch is an ARC DECRA Fellow at the University of Sydney. Her current research project is 'The Floating University: global education between the wars'. She is at Sydney on research leave from her post as Lecturer in Imperial and Colonial History at Brunel University in London.
