MIND THE GAP: HOW TO COME UP WITH INTERESTING RESEARCH QUESTIONS

23 October 2014

Good research questions lead to innovative and relevant research, yet strategies for generating such research questions are not scrutinised. In this presentation I examine how learning researchers construct research questions. I illustrate how this is carried out in five leading education journals. Authors draw on a small number of strategies to identify gaps in already existing literature. In order to overcome these prevailing approaches, I provide two alternative avenues for generating interesting research questions, and in turn, interesting research: problematisation and prescience. I discuss these strategies and their implications for research on human learning.
