Conversations between supervisors and higher-degree-research students

THE PART-TIME PERSPECTIVE

27 October 2014

The supervision relationship is a unique type of relationship. While there are distinct roles and expectations for everyone involved in a supervisory team within an institutional framework, there is an acknowledgment of variation and diversity.

The University of Sydney Supervision of Higher Degree by Research Students Policy 2013 states: “Supervisors and students must recognise that every supervisory relationship is unique and will reflect the particular needs, preferences and work styles of those involved”.

This new series of presentations aims to give the opportunity to supervisors and higher-degree-research students (HDRSs) to share aspects of their supervisory experience and identify and reflect on key issues and on how they approached them from their distinct standpoints.

In this session, Associate Professor David Evans and HDRS Paul Wood will discuss their supervision relationship with an emphasis on its part-time dimension. Paul's doctoral research is titled "Exploring how principals construct knowledge in support of students with disruptive behaviour in NSW primary schools".

Staff and HDRSs in the faculties of Education and Social Work, Arts and Social Sciences and Law are warmly invited to attend. Interested researchers are welcome to attend any – or all – sessions.
