PURPOSES, METHODS AND CHALLENGES IN RESEARCHING A HISTORY OF PARENT-SCHOOL-COMMUNITY RELATIONS

6 November 2014

This presentation addresses two related questions about historical research. The first is a question about the place and purpose of a certain kind of historical research in education. That is, how can historical inquiry usefully address contemporary problems in schooling? The second question is about advancing a research program in a specific topic in the history of Australian education. Currently I am starting some rather ambitious investigations into the history of parent‐school relations and school-community relations in Australia across a number of decades and across different state and school system jurisdictions. This presentation addresses some of the practical and conceptual challenges of managing the complexity of the topic and of unearthing particularkinds of messages or voices from the past.
