COLLECTING AND ANALYSING OBSERVATIONAL DATA: BENEFITS AND CHALLENGES OF USING VIDEO

9 October 2014

Advances in video recording and analysis tools provide researchers opportunities to collect and analyse data of events occurring in classroom settings. Video observations offer the ability to replay, slow down, and increase the volume of events for multiple complex analyses. Challenges using this type of data collection method include strategic selection and placement of equipment to minimise observer effects and to ensure high-quality video and audio are captured. Issues involving data analysis include selecting appropriate data analysis software, determining operational definitions of the behaviours under investigation, and achieving interobserver reliability when coding each behaviour. In this presentation, I will discuss these issues in the context of a study I conducted examining peer interactions involving high-school students with complex support needs and typically developing peers.
