Sydney Ideas

24 March 2015

The arts are central to participatory democracy. If imagination is one possible response to declining civic engagement and the increasing radicalisation of minorities and the young, then the arts in education are positioned as central to the creation of critically aware and participating citizens. However, the arts are marginalised in neoliberal reforms of education as they are considered peripheral and trivialised. A case for the arts in education will be made in this presentation, based on how it safeguards the freedoms and rights we can no longer take for granted.
