  • Keynote speakers: Professor Patricia Duff – "Academic language and literacy socialisation into and through social networks and communities of practice" – is Professor of Language and Literacy Education at the University of British Columbia, working in the graduate programs in Teaching English as a Second Language and Modern Language Education primarily. She is also co-director of the Centre for Research in Chinese Language and Literacy Education. An applied linguist, Patsy’s main scholarly interests at present are related to language socialisation across bilingual and multilingual settings; qualitative research methods in applied linguistics (especially case study and ethnography and complementary approaches to classroom research); issues in the teaching and learning of English, Mandarin, and other international languages; the integration of second-language learners in schools, universities, and society; multilingualism and work; and sociocultural, sociolinguistic, and sociopolitical aspects of language/s in education.

Dr Christian Chun – "Critical pedagogies and English-language learning: in the classroom and beyond" – teaches for the School of Education at the University of New South Wales/Department of English with the City University of Hong Kong. His research addresses the discourses of capitalism, globalisation, neoliberalism, and consumerism in their circulations and mediations in various sites such as the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) classroom, online blogs and social media, and public spaces. Drawing upon his extensive ESL and EAP teaching experiences spanning more than 20 years in the US, Canada, and Hong Kong, Dr Chun is particularly interested in exploring various critical literacy and multimodal social semiotic approaches to English-language education.
