Engaging parents to effect teacher change in Aboriginal education

ENGAGING PARENTS AT THE CULTURAL INTERFACE

18 September 2015

A School and Teacher Education Policy research network presentation.

Kevin Lowe (pictured), Sydney School of Education and Social Work, University of Sydney, reports on his extensive doctoral research into Aboriginal education, focusing on the importance of the ‘cultural interface’ between parents and teachers. Kevin conducted hundreds of interviews throughout NSW for his research. This presentation provides a point to reflect on a critical ethnography study of community and school engagement and its impact on teachers, and their professional knowledge about Aboriginal education and the students in their care.

In focusing on one site within a multisite study, this presentation explores key issues that surfaced in everyday engagements between Aboriginal families with schools and teachers in western NSW, and their impact on challenging the effective delivery of education to Aboriginal students.
