USING SOCIAL MEDIA TO BUILD AN ACADEMIC PROFILE

19 April 2016

Social media and other digital spaces can be powerful sources of networking and engagement for researchers, providing pathways for sharing and disseminating research within and beyond the academy. This seminar will explore the ‘why’, ‘where’ and ‘how’ of establishing and curating a digital presence as a postgraduate/early-career researcher. It will focus on tools for creating networks, including Twitter and Facebook; tools for sharing work, such as blogs and academic networking sites; and tools for shaping an online academic ‘self’, for example, profile pages and websites. Different approaches to developing a digital presence will be explored, along with some ‘traps for young players’. HDR students are invited to come along – whatever their level of familiarity with using online spaces – ready to share their experiences and pick up some new ideas about how to establish and develop a unique digital presence.
