Working with theory in social research

MAKING THE FAMILIAR STRANGE: REFRAMING THE WORLD WITH THEORY

8 March 2016

Can’t we just get on with it? Why bother reading theory when we can just look and see what’s out there? In this seminar, Dr Remy Low will discuss the important role of theory in reframing our taken-for-granted ways of seeing social phenomena, defining problems, collecting data, and arriving at conclusions and solutions. As a demonstration of this, the group will explore how three broad theoretical approaches to qualitative research – phenomenological, critical, and poststructuralist – may approach the phenomena of “neoliberalism” and “gender” differently.
