Working with theory in social research

26 April 2016

The work of Mikhail Bakhtin and the ‘Bakhtin Circle’ provides a means to theorise dialogic relationships between researcher and informant and/or researcher and texts in the process of meaning making. Other significant affordances of working with Bakhtin’s ideas lie in the consideration of informants as neither ‘finalisable’ nor ‘complete’ in any given moment allowing them to legitimately hold what seem to be conflicting views about and possible resistances to matters of interest. In this seminar, a study of teachers’ constructions of professional learning that mattered to them will be used to illustrate how Bakhtin’s ideas were used to respond to unexpected data and to develop a Bakhtinian framework for analysis.
