Developing your voice

A WORKSHOP FOR EARLY-CAREER RESEARCHERS

22 November 2016

A workshop presented by the Sydney School of Education and Social Work's School and Teacher Education Policy Research Network for early-career researchers and doctoral researchers in the final stage of their candidature.

One of the key challenges in academic writing is developing your ‘voice’ – writing that communicates something about you, the researcher, to a reader. Moving from simply getting something written to consciously crafting a text with an interesting and lively ‘voice’ requires both diagnostic tools and rhetorical strategies.

Participants in this workshop will look at some of the standard critiques of academic writing, and then consider what else might constitute an academic ‘voice’. They will interrogate some ‘good’ academic writers who have developed distinctive and recognisable styles, as well as work on a piece of their own writing.
