World premiere of Jane Caro's The Staffroom

9 August 2017

A special presentation by Sydney School of Education and Social Work's School and Teacher Education Policy research network (STEP).

This is a special preview screening of episode 1 of social commentator Jane Caro’s new ABC documentary series about teaching in Australian high schools today. The Staffroom, will screen on the ABC's Compass program over three Saturdays beginning August 12, but Jane will present this screening in person, and answer audience questions afterwards, along with a panel of others associated with the documentary series, and professionals involved in teacher education. The filmmakers were given unfettered access to the classrooms and staffrooms of the six teachers featured. It goes behind the scenes of their schools, into the teachers' “sacred spaces” and reveals a reality far more complex than the media headlines suggest. Audience members will be shown that teaching is a multilayered, exhausting vocation that requires far more than simply offering subject-area instruction to students six hours a day, five days a week.
