Independent schools' Teacher Education scholarships

In partnership with some of the state's most prestigious independent schools, Sydney School of Education and Social Work offers an extensive range of scholarships to students enrolled in teaching programs. Each of these scholarships is valued at $11,750 for one year only. Selection is by written application, followed by interviews for short-listed candidates. To be eligible, students will need to be about to commence their final year in 2019. The programs applicable to each scholarship are listed below the school name, together with any additional features or requirements.




International Grammar School

Scholarship recipients will be expected to spend time at the school each week (as their University program permits) in Terms 1 and 2, receive guidance from a mentor teacher, followed by an internship (the major Professional Experience) at the school where possible, across Terms 3 and 4 to participate in both academic and co-curricular activities. Applicable programs:

  • Master of Teaching (Secondary)
  • Bachelor of Education (Secondary: Mathematics), Bachelor of Science

Pymble Ladies College

Scholarship recipients will be expected to spend time at the school each week (as their University program permits) in Terms 1 and 2, receive guidance from a mentor teacher, followed by an internship (the major Professional Experience) at the school where possible, across Terms 3 and 4 to participate in both academic and co-curricular activities. Applicable programs:

  • Master of Teaching (Secondary) in humanities, science or mathematics

Preference will be given to students who can contribute to co-curricular areas within the school. Scholarship recipients will be expected to spend time at the school each week in Terms 1 and 2, receive guidance from a mentor teacher, followed by an internship (the major Professional Experience) in Terms 3 and 4 to participate in both academic and co-curricular activities. Applicable programs:

Applicable programs:

  • Master of Teaching (Secondary) in either mathematics or English

As well as being a part of the professional teaching life of the school, receiving guidance from a mentor teacher, scholarship recipients will be expected to participate in the tutorial and homework program in the Learning Resources Centre. Applicable programs:

Scholarship recipients will have exceptional academic merit. Successful applicants will be expected to spend time at the school each week in Terms 1 and 2 (as their University program permits; receive guidance from a mentor teacher followed by an internship (the major Professional Experience) across Terms 3 and 4; and participate in both academic and co-curricular activities. Applicable programs:

  • Master of Teaching (Primary)
  • Master of Teaching (Secondary) for students whose curriculum areas of study include English, mathematics, science or commerce/economics
  • Bachelor of Education (Primary)
  • Bachelor of Education (Health and Physical Education) for students whose second curriculum area of study is English, mathematics, science or commerce/economics
  • Bachelor of Education (Secondary: Humanities and Social Sciences), Bachelor of Arts for students whose curriculum areas of study include English, mathematics, science or commerce/economics
  • Bachelor of Education (Secondary: Science), Bachelor of Science for students whose curriculum areas of study include English, mathematics, science or commerce/economics
  • Bachelor of Education (Secondary: Mathematics), Bachelor of Science for students whose curriculum areas of study include English, mathematics, science or commerce/economics.

Newington College

To be eligible for this scholarship, students must be specialising in one or two of the following: mathematics, physics, chemistry, drama, English, history or philosophy, and be able to contribute to the curricular and co-curricular life of the college. Recipients will be expected to spend time at the school each week (as their University program permits) in Terms 1 and 2, receive guidance from a mentor teacher, followed by an internship (the major Professional Experience) at the school where possible, across Terms 3 and 4 to participate in both academic and co-curricular activities. Applicable programs:

Shore School

Scholarship recipients will be expected to contribute to the curricular and co-curricular life of the school in areas such as drama, debating, sport, music and games. They will be expected to be present in the school about five hours a week (as their University timetable permits), receive guidance from a mentor teacher, and undertake an internship (the major Professional Experience) at the school when possible. The successful recipient may also be given preference for employment opportunities after graduation should a position become available. Applicable programs:
