Primary teaching PE UoS details

Primary school preservice teachers are required to complete Professional Experience placements that are integrated with a Professional Experience unit. The Professional Experience units are taught through lectures, tutorials and workshops at the University.

Bachelor of Education

Second Year Professional Experience

Unit of study name: Professional Experiences 2 (Primary) (EDUP2010)

This unit incorporates a 15-day Professional Experience and continues preservice teachers' development as reflective practitioners. It examines various ways in which the concepts of quality teaching and curriculum and evaluation have been defined in current literature. The phases of planning, implementation and evaluation in developing learning activities and teaching sequences will be examined along with the importance of reflective practices. Classroom-management issues will also be explored, building on discussions in EDUP1002. Students will develop an understanding of the inter-relationship between quality teaching dimensions and management of the classroom-learning community. They will demonstrate their understanding and expertise of quality teaching and learning principles through peer teaching and during their Professional Experiences in schools.

Third Year Professional Experience

Unit of study name: Professional Experiences 3 (Primary) (EDUP3007)

This unit of study and school-based 20-day Professional Experience builds on the units EDUP1002, in Year 1, and EDUP2010, in Year 2. This unit moves to a more complex interpretation of the learning experience by focusing on the diverse learning needs of students. Preservice teachers will develop their knowledge on how students learn from the University-based classes in the first half of the unit of study. In the second half, during their Professional Experience, they will apply this knowledge to their teaching practices. Throughout the unit of study, the emphasis will be on employing this developing knowledge of students' learning in the planning, assessing and reporting of effective learning outcomes. The unit continues preservice teachers' development as reflective practitioners and focuses particularly on Standards 1, 2 and 5 of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.

Fourth Year Professional Experience

Unit of study name: Professional Experiences 4 (Primary) (EDUP4079)

This unit – including a 14-day Professional Experience placement – plays a significant role in student self-assessment of their attainment of the National Teaching standards of the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL). In doing so, the unit supports students to access strategies to develop all aspects of the graduate standards, while making substantial input to the development of AITSL professional teaching standards 6 and 7. The lectures, forum and tutorials will explore the standards, with a focus on examining preservice teachers' beliefs, evidence of current attainment, needs for development and steps to achieve full attainment of the standards. Assessment tasks are designed to support preservice teachers as they undertake these endeavours, especially during their Professional Experience. The final assessment task will engage the students in reflection on an identified need in a school, which will be the stimulus used to develop a focus on their own professional needs. This professional need will be further explored through action learning within the final Professional Experience placement, the Professional Experiences Internship (EDUP 4017).

Master of Teaching

First Year Professional Experience

Unit of study name: Professional Experiences 1 (EDMT5503)
