Tertiary mentor

WANT TO BECOME A TERTIARY MENTOR?

Schools (primary and secondary) settings

Are you a retired teacher who is looking for a meaningful way to share your expertise and passion for the profession? Are you looking for part-time work while you study or raise your family but want to keep up to date with developments in the profession? Join us.

We are looking for dedicated teachers who love the profession and want to develop that love and commitment in the next generation. Help us pass on the baton using the skills and expertise you have already developed.

We demand a lot – a knowledge of the Australian Professional Teaching Standards and an understanding of how challenging a professional experience can be for preservice teachers. We want your great interpersonal skills, and your knowledge of the job and how to mentor young teachers. We don’t offer much monetary remuneration but you will receive the respect and appreciation that these young teachers will offer as well as the gratitude of all of us involved in preparing young people for the profession.

If this is you please contact us now, we will be offering Tertiary Mentor Training early in 2017 and we would love you to join us.

Early Childhood settings

The school is seeking expressions of interest from university-qualified Early Childhood teachers interested in becoming Tertiary Mentors. This vital role supports the professional development of our Early Childhood Education students and helps assess their practice.

Tertiary Mentors in Early Childhood Education are required to have email, telephone and face-to-face contact with our undergraduate and postgraduate students during Professional Experience placements in 0–5 years' childcare settings. Mentoring commitments range from 1–4 hours' face-to-face site visits per student placement (see table after you close this window).

An understanding of the National Quality Framework and experience teaching in an Early Childhood education setting is required. If you are interested in becoming a mentor we would love to hear from you!

Contact: felicity.bywater@sydney.edu.au. Phone +61 2 9036 9539 (Tuesday/Thursday/Friday) for further details, including expectations and remuneration.

The tertiary mentor has responsibility as the University’s representative for liaising with schools or early-childhood centres, as well as supervising teachers and preservice teachers. Tertiary mentors can contribute significantly to the preservice teacher’s professional learning during the Professional Experience placement. They are expected to consult with the supervising teacher/s and, where necessary, clarify for them what is required to complete the Professional Experience report.

Tertiary mentors assigned to preservice teachers enrolled in the Diploma in Education (Aboriginal) and the Bachelor of Education (Secondary: Aboriginal Studies) are required to submit a tertiary mentor's report after each Professional Experience placement. These reports are additional to the reports of the supervising teacher/s. As well, tertiary mentors of preservice teachers enrolled in the BEd (Sec:AbStud) are required to submit a tertiary mentor's Report of Workplace Training/Service Learning placement (pdf, 416kB) independently of the report of the workplace supervisor.

The tertiary mentor may make one or two visits to meet individually with each preservice teacher onsite during their Professional Experience, or may opt to meet weekly with the group undertaking PE, depending on the program and year of study (see below):
