This full-day course begins by clarifying what needs to be taught to students K–6 to help them learn to read (reading processes, contexts for reading, reading conventions, comprehension and word identification strategies, and the information process), then identifies how that may be accomplished (through modelled, shared, guided and independent reading). Lastly, we will examine guided reading. The afternoon looks at Literacy Centres (tasks that students can complete independently, enabling teachers to work with small groups during guided reading).
Robyn Wild has worked for the NSW Department of Education and Training as a classroom teacher, assistant principal, literacy consultant and senior curriculum officer in the Early Learning Unit. She works part-time at Macquarie University in the Education Faculty and the Institute of Early Childhood, and at the University of Sydney.
