Social and Educational Participation and Engagement

Welcome to the homepage of the Social and Educational Participation and Engagement Research Network (SEPERN) at the University of Sydney. The network was established in 2014 with a goal of bringing together researchers from different fields and disciplines who use in their research the concepts of participation and engagement. The SEPERN has a particular interest in examining the broader issues of social inclusion for individuals and groups that experience disadvantage, marginalisation, and exclusion, with a focus on disability.

Aims of SEPERN

The Social and Educational Participation and Engagement Research Network (SEPERN) aims to bring together researchers from the fields of policy, education, social work, health and other disciplines to examine social inclusion through the lenses of participation and engagement.

SEPERN serves as a forum for researchers to establish a broader dialogue regarding the issues of social inclusion, advance research through opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations, and promote a greater understanding of social and educational participation of individuals with disabilities.

Objectives of SEPERN

SEPERN will advance research and understanding in the field by:

  • establishing and enhancing links within the Sydney School of Education and Social Work, other University faculties and research centres

  • strengthening the SEPERN research agenda within school and network partners

  • promoting a broader understanding of social and educational participation through publications and collaboration with education and public sectors

  • providing a forum for members – including honours students and higher-degree-research students – to present and discuss their work with colleagues.
