This project enhanced the existing eLearning sites by improving the educational design of the sites and developing additional online resources such as: a glossary of research methods terms; a question database for formative weekly quizzes; and, a grading form for consistency in marking students assignments.
Building eLearning Contexts in Health
This project achieved its outcome of transforming an existing unit of study to give educators the opportunity to learn and utilise the principles of good eLearning design to develop eLearning in their health science teaching contexts.
Pilot iPod Touch case studies project
This project developed the Case Study “I’m not sick” for the iPod Touch. The Case Study on the iPod Touch included CRS tutorial questions, learning topic materials and references and instructions guiding students on how to transfer content from desktop to iPod Touch.
Identifying and implementing an ICT application for collaborative, comparative and constructive online learning
The project outcome is the web-based Comment system which allows different interpretations or responses to the same data or theory to be easily compared. For example: a single page of transcribed interview data can be analysed and marked up by four individual students independently. After all four students have submitted their analysis, the application allows students to simultaneously view their workings online and critically compare their responses, with scaffolding by the teacher, in a collaborative wiki-like online environment.
Additional functionality is built into the system for users to upload a mind map. An extensive user guide has also been developed.
Blended module template for NURS5025, NURS 5023, NURS 5024 and NURS5026 - PHASE 1
This project developed an elearning template for NURS5056, NURS5057, NURS5058 & NURS5072 with customised icons and banners and a weekly modular structure that the AiC can progressively add content to.
Extending the functionality of the 2007 online case based learning template and building another case
This project was completed satisfactorily with the existing Flash template being transferred to a more robust and sustainable HTML template. The AiC was provided with detailed instructions as to how to recreate cases in the template and how to export from one WebCT site to another.
Faculty of Pharmacy eLearning site template review
In the first project period of 2009 (March – June), an extensive needs analysis was conducted with Faculty of Pharmacy academic and general staff and students into the deficiencies of the current template. The data obtained from this needs analysis was used to inform the redesign of the new HTML template and CSS.
In the second project period (August – December) we investigated the use of PHP to populate an HTML page from the Faculty of Pharmacy unit outline word template. Whilst this process functioned well, it did not easily accommodate the small variations in the pharmacy unit outlines so it was not developed further.
The new Pharmacy template is being trailed in Semester 1 2010.
Mobilising multimedia resources to support clinical learning in Nursing
The Nurse Catalogue and Submission Form is a web-based catalogue system, containing information on the video resources available to academics via the Lectopia unit: Nursing_Multimedia.
The form is divided into two sections, the catalogue and the academic material submission form.
The catalogue contains a number of fields that facilitate both accurate record keeping of video resources and easy searching of available resources.
The academic material submission form, makes academics responsible for ensuring that any video they wish to upload to Lectopia meets the owners’ copyright and usage requirements.
Welcome to the Sydney Dental Hospital, Department of Paediatric Dentistry
This project created an eLearning site to orientate students to the Paediatric clinic at Sydney Dental Hospital. Students are required to go to the eLearning site to prepare themselves prior to their rotation in the Paediatric clinic. As well as the textual information provided, a short video was produced in conjunction with AV services, giving students a walk through of the main areas of the Paediatric clinic.
Indigenous Health Case-study Resource site for Multi-professional Use
This project developed a Indigenous Health Case-based Learning resource site for the Faculty of Health Sciences’. This site included sample cases and a prototype for how the case could be presented using tools available in the university LMS.
Inter- and intra-block study support for Indigenous students in courses in substance use
This project continued work begun in 2008, by reorganizing materials in response to student feedback and further developing activities for each of the 6 blocks.
eLearning resource centre update and review
This project involved the creation of an open access web resource to showcase strategic eLearning projects and other eLearning innovations in the faculties of Dentistry, Health Sciences, Medicine, Nursing & Midwifery and Pharmacy. In this phase of the project we conducted video interviews with 12 academics representing all 5 of the allied health faculties and developed a website according to university branding guidelines. This site is due to go live at the end of 2010.
2008 Projects
The Caries Management System – Understanding the protocols
The aim of this project was to develop an elearning resource to assist students in learning to classify caries diagnosis according to the principles of the Caries Management System (CMS) and, subsequently, to apply the follow-on corresponding treatment for their patients. The Sydney eLearning educational designer worked closely with the Academic in charge to develop a WebCT site with 8 “Key Learning Areas” delivered via WebCT Learning Modules. Each of these 8 learning modules contain PowerPoints and formative quizzes to reinforce students learning of the content.
Developing active online learning modules to support the Person, Context and Practice (PCP) of ‘cultural perspectives’ in health
- Personal awareness of constructs and biases towards diverse cultural perspectives
- An understanding of the social and health care context of culture globally
- An improved ability to practice with cultural competence, for clients and health care professionals
This aim was realized through the development of a WebCT site with 3 core sections delivered via WebCT Learning Modules (1. Culture and Person, 2. Culture and Context, 3. Application to Practice). Within each of these core sections, students will be undertaking a sequence of learning activities through the Discussion, Assessment and Assignment tools
Video clips online for enhancement of practical skills in Neurological physiotherapy (PHASE 1)
The aims of this elearning project were to: increase student access to demonstrations of necessary skills, develop staff expertise and improve staff workload issues. Sydney eLearning worked closely with AV services and the Academic in charge to produce a Flash video player with a staff interface that enabled the streaming of videos and text content to students from links within their Physiotherapy unit of study WebCT site.
Development of a pilot blended unit of study in Transplantation for the Master of Surgery
The goal of this eLearning project was to complete development of a blended unit of study site that supports flexible learning for part-time students studying in the Master of Surgery program.
The Sydney eLearning educational designer worked with the Academic-in-charge to design 10 Learning modules containing lecture material, case studies (with assessed quizzes followed by group discussions) and recommended readings. The selective release tool was used to direct students through the learning sequence. The educational designer also provided training on how to create narrated PowerPoints for streaming on the Lectopia server.
Developing an eLearning scaffold for delivery of staged learning processes across selected nursing degree curriculae (PHASE 1)
The goal of this project was to extend use & continue development of a WebCT based cross-curricula framework to support continued learning on professionally related topics. This goal was achieved through the creation of a WebCT site for each of the topics – Exploring Legal Issues for Nurses and Evidence-based nursing in Critical Care. Both these topics were modelled on the design of the Research Roundtable WebCT site, which gives students the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge in a professionally relevant topic alongside their unit of study.
Video clips online for enhancement of practical skills in Neurological physiotherapy (PHASE 2)
This was a continuation of the project begun in semester 1. In PHASE 2 of this project an additional Flash player was developed for the topic of Spinal Cord Injury and the functionality of the flash player was modified with the addition of a buffer indicator and a progress handle. An additional button was also added to the interface which will allow for the inclusion of a second video demonstrating to students the difference between the training video and an actual live patient demonstration.
Developing an eLearning scaffold for delivery of staged learning processes across selected nursing degree curriculae (PHASE 2)
Achieving a level of mathematics competency sufficient to support safe nursing for example, when dispensing medications, is a key learning objective within units addressing the clinical practice of nursing. The aim of this project was to use eLearning to support the implementation of strategies for the effective teaching and assessment of the required mathematics calculations and the development of remedial support for those students identified as being at risk of poor performance in this important area. A WebCT site “Numeracy for Nurses” was created for this purpose. Each of the four modules within this site contained a diagnostic quiz, practice exercises and self assessment quiz implemented using a combination of WebCT’s assessment and assignment tools. All students are required to complete the diagnostic quiz for each module. Students who receive lower than 80% in the diagnostic quiz must complete the accompanying exercises for that module and then re-test themselves with the self assessment quiz. The use of WebCT’s Gradebook feature allows UoS coordinators to identify students at risk early in the learning process and direct them to additional learning support if required.in this important area.
Professional Practice & Fieldwork Information Centre
The goal of this project was to consolidate and integrate resources across the Faculty of Health Sciences’ Clinical and Professional Fieldwork Portfolio in order to ensure that best practice is implemented across the Faculty. A thorough review of existing e-learning resources was conducted with the mapping of existing discipline sites and the identification and restructuring of information to form a common template. Staff from the disciplines received one-to-one training on how to transfer content from their old sites and customise the template to suit their content and program structure.
Inter- and intra-block study support for indigenous students in courses in substance use
The aim of this project was to improve student learning through the provision of literacy and numeracy support resources available on a WebCT site or a CDROM (for remote students without quality access to the Internet). These resources will be used predominantly between on-campus blocks; students will be working with community and/or clinical mentors and building on the face to face teaching of these skills. The Sydney eLearning educational designer worked closely with the academic-in charge to develop a WebCT site and CD ROM titled “Indigenous Health Substance abuse”. The site and CD ROM contain: presentation materials in html files, Flash quizzes and a Flash animation on “How to reference for Public Health courses” The site has a 'How to use this site' folder with student guides, an 'Assessment' folder, a 'Block resources' folder for materials used face-to-face in the Block and 5 InterBlock folders with online materials. Artwork supplied by one of the current students was developed into banners and icons by the Sydney eLearning educational designer.
Development of an interactive tutorial to assist post-graduate markers in learning how to provide written feedback
The aims of this project were to improve student learning through improved written formative and summative feedback of written student assessments and to develop professional academic skills among post-graduate students, specifically the provision of appropriate and useful formative feedback. These project aims were realized through the development of two Flash feedback activities for each section of a typical report (Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion) and a Flash activity on Linking report sections. These activities were designed to guide tutors through the process of giving feedback and lead them into completing an individual activity for discussion in a face to face training session.
Clinical Log Books – developing an eLearning approach
Clinical placements are an essential component of student learning within the pre-registration Master of Nursing program. To date student experiences and their reflections on their clinical learning have been recorded through use of paper-based log books. These are expensive to produce and difficult to store for the 50 year period potentially required by current regulations. In this project the Sydney eLearning educational designer reviewed current practice in the local and international context and produced a report with recommendations on how the faculty of Nursing and Midwifery could transfer their paper based logbooks to an electronic format.
Development of clinical case studies for electronic formative feedback
The goal of this project was to transform current paper-based clinical case studies in order to provide electronic formative feedback to pharmacy students. Currently, students in the final year of the Bachelor of Pharmacy unit of study- Integrated Dispensing, complete weekly medication record forms for their clinical case studies. Approximately 3-4 record forms per student (a total of 240 students in 2007) are submitted weekly to the tutors for marking. Handwritten feedback is provided on the record forms by the following week, and in total this requires approximately 30 hours of staff commitment per week. The weekly feedback which is provided to the students is essential for guiding their improvement in this unit. The Sydney eLearning educational designers modified the current hard copy form and placed it online using WebCT’s assignment tool. Students will complete the forms individually and in discussion with their peers in workshop sessions, and will submit them electronically on the day following the workshop. The use of the assignment drop box will enable students to receive feedback as soon as the due date for the form has passed and also allow the markers to concentrate their marking efforts on the patient interaction components of the form as opposed to fundamental aspects (such as dosage form, strength, dosage regimen, interactions, side-effects and contraindications) Students will be able to access their feedback and grades securely through the web, and the system will automatically record the grades.
2007 Projects
Oral radiology eLearning project
The purpose of this project was to enhance professional education in oral radiography and improve recognition of normal anatomy, film faults and diagnosis of pathology on intra and extra oral radiographs and digital images and to thus enhance patient care in Dentistry, BOH and other related Health Science faculties.
This purpose was achieved by the development of online resources and activities to complement the Years 1–4 Bachelor of Dentistry (BDent), Bachelor of Oral Health (BOH) and other Health Science programs. A University LMS site was used in conjunction with an image gallery site (hosted by dentistry) to facilitate flexible student access to normal radiographic anatomy, film faults and radiographic diagnosis of pathology resources. Students have year-round access to the resources, including self tests for revision of key concepts.
Paediatric Oral Health & Nutrition Module Version 2
The purpose of this project was to enhance professional education and patient care in oral health settings. Version 1 of this module was introduced into the BDent Programme in July 2006. In this project period, version 1 was reviewed in light of feedback gained from student evaluation and for the second iteration of this unit of study, more extensive use was made of the online tools in the University LMS (group manager, discussion tools, assignment drop box and quizzes). Students were provided with a structured five stage learning sequence guiding them through the learning activities with clear instructions and templates to use to complete their final assessed project.
Oral health literacy and development of health promotion materials
This project supported a co-teaching agreement between the Faculties of Dentistry and Architecture to provide their students with the authentic learning experience of client and consultant. A University LMS site was created to support this collaboration and was accessed by 144 Dentistry and Architecture students. The University LMS site presents 1st year and 4th year Dentistry and Architecture students with the information required to meet their common learning objective of developing an oral health promotion program. The site includes the selective release of materials to 1st year and 4th year students using group sign up sheets, the provision of guides to assist students with using the required software (InDesign) and a gallery of examples from previous years as a resource for students to study.
Automated learning activity time mapping and monitoring tool
This project transformed existing paper based materials (the Learning Activity Grid project) into a web-based dynamic, interactive study time planning tool for teaching staff, supporting ‘what if’ activity and data collection.
Navigate your Fieldwork Journey: Take control
A University LMS site was developed which is accessible year-round by all students enrolled in entry-level Occupational Therapy programs. This site allows OCCP staff to store all relevant fieldwork site information in an easily accessible central location. Information stored on this site includes site name, contact person and phone number, relevant caseload/learning opportunities and recommended pre-reading.
Peer assessment data collection and analysis using the University LMS
The School of Medical Radiation Sciences had an existing method of peer assessment data collection which involved the use of MS FrontPage for data collection and MS Excel for analysis. Data collection and data analysis using the existing tools was difficult. The peer evaluation tool was redesigned as a quiz in the University LMS. This eliminated data capture problems prevalent in the previous web based peer evaluation tool. The tool is also now embedded in the students’ actual UoS (closely linking it to the related assessment) and staff can easily manipulate and analyse data via the downloadable excel spreadsheets.
Online learning modules for rural health curriculum
A University LMS site containing three modules was developed for use by all faculties who (1) place undergraduate or postgraduate students in rural contexts for professional experience (2) want to include a component on rural and remote society in Australia in their curriculum.
The eLearning team worked with a content writer and the academic in charge to develop an appropriate learning design for the modules. Each of the three modules of the site (Groundwork, Approaches & Practice) contain learning outcomes, discussion, video triggers, readings, case studies, reflective journal, extensive references and assessment activities and detailed PDF instructions for students on how to use the site.
Investigating e-portfolios for use across the Faculties of Health
This projected investigated the use of e-portfolios across a number of sectors including education, the health professions and other relevant professions such as engineering and law. A systematic review and narrative analysis of e-portfolios-in-action was completed with recommendations for portfolio development, piloting, evaluation and utilisation at the University of Sydney.
Delivering an online Interprofessional Learning resource for all health and social care students (IPL)
A cross faculty (Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing & Midwifery, Pharmacy, Social Work & Health Science) University LMS site was developed that provides a common learning resource for all health and social care students and supports interprofessional learning throughout their professional training. The site provides students with a set of IPL activities which they are directed to by their UoS coordinators.

This project developed a Flash template comprising a collection of independently configurable and repeatable sub-templates which function as containers for learning content created by an academic, and are imported into and sequenced in a computer-based PBL case/scenario learning activity.
Orientation to Pharmacy Practice
The Orientation to Pharmacy Practice Settings University LMS site uses a variety of media (images, voice recordings etc) to orient students to the pharmacy placement environment prior to their actual placement.
2006 Projects
Development of a web-based activities to enhance interactive learning in a distance mode physiotherapy Masters course
This project converted a distance postgraduate unit of study that was previously solely text-based to the online learning environment. This project achieved a far greater online component than was originally expected, and now all nine modules are presented online.
Self analysis tool to help prospective postgraduate students identify their elearning or distance learning readiness
This project developed an exemplary activity-based, publicly accessible site for prospective postgraduate students of the Faculty of Health Sciences www3.fhs.usyd.edu.au/getreal/. The site not only provides information but also activities that encourage students to seriously and critically evaluate their readiness for:
- The attributes of course that they are interested in with a “study matchmaker activity”
- Using technology to learn with a “technology survival challenge
- Information from other students an further help resources
Orientation to online learning
Related to the project described above, this project developed a Get Learning site in the university LMS which orients commencing postgraduate coursework students to the skills required for successful online study at the University of Sydney. The Get Learning site provides information and also gives students the opportunity to practice commonly used online tools such as online discussion, calendar, quiz and assignment submission.
The Get Learning template is available for use by other faculties/programs wishing to develop their own orientation programs.
Australian Health Care Systems Online Project
The purpose of this project was to more fully utilise the updated Health Care Game, an interactive, web based heuristic game (the winner of the 2000 ASCILITE award for exemplary use of electronic technologies in teaching and learning in tertiary education) by integrating it with the current unit of study materials. In order to achieve this purpose, a University LMS was developed that delivers materials for four topic areas of the UoS HIM1056 Health Care Delivery Systems online for the first time.
The University LMS site provides access to lecture based materials, other online resources, opportunities for students to discuss key aspects of the topic areas, and electronic assignment submission.
Developing web-based capacity to enhance online learning in graduate entry and post-graduate units of study
This project developed the Research Roundtable - a learning design that provides students with a staged scaffolded activities directly related to the assessment for the aligned unit of study. Faculty staff were also assisted in developing learning materials that encourage increased depth of learning online.
New LMS templates for the StudyAge program
This project involved the redesign of seven StudyAge units of study to a manageable University LMS template that enables easy maintenance of the sites with numerous instructors.
The template has a clear modular structure which uses simple LMS tools (content modules, quizzes and discussions) that can be updated easily within the website, therefore avoiding confusion with filenames and alterations in the look and feel of the sites.
New guidelines for the students who study each unit fully online were also developed.
Paediatric Oral Health and Nutrition Module: to enhance professional education and patient care in Dentistry
This project represented a ‘proof of concept’ approach to complementing the Year 3 Bachelor of Dentistry (BDent) Paediatric Dentistry block. A University LMS site was developed for the paediatric oral health and nutrition module which included four student learning activities (a lecture with resource materials, two online quizzes and a clinical based activity with online discussion activity).
Team building in interprofessional learning
An IPL Team work in Health module was built in the university LMS. The module was designed to facilitate online communication between team members and provide structured activities as a precursor to the face-to-face team building activity.
In Semester 1, 2007, the module went live with its first interprofessional group – students from Social Work and Yoorang Garang (School of Indigenous Health Studies). The module is being collaboratively taught and administered by the Faculty of Health and Faculty of Education & Social Work.
FLERT
This project developed the final five help modules (Overall Structure, Title, Methods, Conclusion, References) for the Flexible Electronic Report-writing Tool (FLERT), for student scientific report writing.
eLearning support for multi-campus delivery of the Bachelor of Health Sciences
A template was designed and developed to provide consistency in navigation, structure and layout across the Bachelor of Health Sciences UoS. This template then formed the foundation for the development of a University LMS site for each of the 1st year units of study. This was trialled in first semester 2007.
2005 Projects
Moving Face to Face Teaching to Online Learning Environment
This project developed the effective transformation of content material from a traditional face to face lecture room situation to the online learning environment. This involved an investigation of the processes and decisions that need to be made by academics about how to deliver content online. This includes an analysis of the relative advantages and disadvantages, technological requirements, intellectual property and copyright issues involved and time required to undertake this process. Guidance materials to assist academics in their decision making process were also developed. This project applied this understanding to three examples of online content delivery:
- Replicating the lecture experience online by integrating narrated PowerPoint presentations with other course materials
- Transforming the lecture experience online for large numbers of students and providing feedback on student learning and progress
- Capturing visiting content experts for reuse in future units of study
Developing Templates for Rich Online Case-based, Inquiry-based and Problem-based Learning Modules
This project indexed existing templates used for online scenarios. They were evaluated for their educational value and ease of use in the University LMS (CE6). Key features were identified for case, inquiry and problem based scenarios in both clinical and non-clinical contexts. A template was modified for use in the University LMS (CE6) which was applicable to a number of disciplines including physiotherapy, medical education and public health along with guidance materials.
Online Facilitation and Support of Interprofessional Learning
Online resources and learning activities were evaluated for use by facilitators, clinicians and students participating in interprofessional education and clinical placements. Three activities based on sound pedagogical principles to facilitate interprofessional learning were developed including a preclinical discussion activity, an online reflection tool and a roundtable discussion activity. They were made available to all staff to enable the transfer of the activities to a broad range of courses. In addition support materials for students and facilitators participating in interprofessional learning clinical placements were transferred to the online environment through the development of an interprofessional learning universtity LMS (CE6) site. The development of interprofessional resources and learning activities complements the work of the College of Health Sciences (CHS) Interprofessional Learning Working Group, which is part of a College-wide initiative to expand interprofessional learning in clinical placements in undergraduate and graduate degree programs.
Development of a Flexible Electronic Report-writing Tool (FLERT) to Help Students Learn Report Writing Skills
This project aimed to improve students' scientific report writing skills. It addressed generic communication skills as well as supporting the learning of scientific concepts. A web-based report-writing tool (FLERT) was developed that consisted of a standardised report writing template or shell to enabled students to construct their draft scientific report. A series of interactive support materials was provided to guide the students through this process with discipline specific materials available for the subject of physiology.
2004 Projects
