Laboratory For Smart Membranes and Advanced Water Treatment
The increasing demand for water and energy has resulted in the need for a variety of water treatment and energy harvesting solutions.
Membrane technologies have been integral to both water treatment and energy generation. However, there are many stresses placed on membranes when used in these applications. These include aggressive conditions arising from a diverse composition of materials presented to the membranes, the range of chemicals used to clean them, extensive bacterial activity and mechanical stress.
Our research addresses these issues by focussing on new membrane surface treatments based on advances in nano-chemistry designed to control surface properties of membranes, reduce fouling, and improve performance.
