Welcome from the Head of School

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the WWW site of the School of Civil Engineering at The University of Sydney. This site contains information on the courses, research work, staff, facilities, publications and services offered within the department.

Increasing numbers of national and international students enroll in our School, attracted by the quality of our teaching and research, and the unique lifestyle offered by living in Sydney, Australia. Our undergraduate and postgraduate course content is constantly under review, with input from industry a major factor in determining the syllabus for each course. Our graduates are in high demand by industry, due to the generic and specific engineering skills obtained from our degree program which is accredited by the Institution of Engineers, Australia.

Our academic staff continue to perform exceptionally well in teaching, and in research, as evidenced by our success in nationally competitive research grant funding. The expertise of our staff is much sought after by our profession. The Centre for Geotechnical Research, the Centre for Advanced Structural Engineering, and Wind Engineering Services are all able to provide expert consulting services and use of our facilities to industry. The contribution of our non-academic staff cannot be overlooked, and without the support of our entire team in our School, we could not maintain excellence.

The research interests of the academic staff of the School are diverse. We have major strengths in areas such as structural engineering, geotechnical engineering and environmental geomechanics, risk analysis, materials, concrete structures and technology, construction and project management, fluid mechanics and wind engineering, and ocean technology.

We take great pride in our Project Management Graduate Programme. The Programme offers on-line Professional Development and Formal Graduate courses in project management delivered via the Internet to students anywhere in the world. The Program was awarded the Professional Development Product of the Year Award and the Professional Development Provider of the Year Award by the Project Management Institute in 2004.

Our Civil Engineering Foundation provides excellent interaction between staff, students and the engineering profession. Our Graduates Association, now known as Civilnet, fosters and maintains links between our graduates and the School.
