Future students

Tom BE (Civil): At school, I was always interested in Maths and Science, and it was the practical application of these disciplines that drew me to Engineering. Being such a broad field, it was hard to know which branch of engineering to study let alone which university I should study at. In the end, it was the physical scale that drew me to Civil Engineering and the long and proud history of engineering at Sydney University (JJC Bradfield, the chief engineer behind the Sydney Harbour Bridge, is one alumnus who stands out for me) that led to my enrolment in the BE (Civil) degree.

My innate curiosity has always fuelled my desire to understand the fundamentals. Simply learning how to do something was never going to be enough, knowing why was what really interested me. So when we were told on day one by one of the lecturers that in an Engineering degree at Sydney University "we don't just want you to be able to use technology, we you to be able to change technology", I knew I had made the right choice.

Tom is now working on his PhD in the School of Civil Engineering

Full Elective Choice

Enrolling in our "standard" BE (Civil Engineering) gives you full choice of all our elective subjects in later years - in specialisations of structural, environmental & geotechnical engineering and project management.

After a 2nd or 3rd year year you can easily change to one of our specialist streams in these fields.
