Geomechanics and Mining Materials

The Sydney Centre in Geomechanics and Mining Materials specialises in geotechnical engineering, granular mechanics and mining geomechanics. Through the centre you have access to:

Expert advice, prototype testing and evaluation of novel foundation systems, geotechnical and microstructural testing, and mineral and mining material testing.

Facilities
Three specialised geomechanical laboratories; Geomechanics and Geoenvironmental, Particles and Grains, and Mining Materials, and a range of specialist material preparation, testing and characterisation equipment.

Wind, Waves and Water

The Centre for Wind, Waves and Water undertakes research into environmental resources, focusing on four key areas; wind engineering, fluid mechanics, environmental flows and environmental modelling.

Consultancy services
Design and analysis of wind and aerodynamic structures, modelling and testing of convection currents and flows, and computer modelling of environmental interactions and hydraulics.

Facilities
A dedicated fluids laboratory equipped with boundary lane and snowdrift wind tunnels, a fluid column and instrumentation, and square, rectangular and wedge shaped wave tanks, as well as sophisticated control systems and instrumentation.

Software
Specialist tools for modelling interactions between water and mineral particles, suspended biomass and plant epidemics.

Complex Systems

The Complex Systems Research Group develops holistic approaches to the coordination and management of, organisational, social and biological systems. We develop modelling systems to help industry, government and public institutions understand and manage coordination and interaction in areas as diverse as property development, mining, water, health, energy, IT, banking and finance, government and the not-for-profit sector.

Consulting Services
Modelling to aid in the understanding, prediction and management of natural disasters, epidemics, financial fluctuations, and interpersonal interactions in team environments, and provision of guidance on resource organisation and capacity building.
