Research project - Advanced 3D Analysis and Design Optimisation of Scaffolding Systems
Supervisor: Prof Kim Rasmussen
Associate Supervisor: Dr Tim Wilkinson
This research intends to investigate the structural behaviour of steel scaffolding systems, especially their failure modes under various loads. The research will be carried out by 3-dimensional finite element analysis, based on the principal of accurate nonlinear finite element model accounting for both nonlinear geometry, and material nonlinearity. The research will look closely at how the complex joints such as spigot joints and couplers of the scaffolding systems can be modeled in the analysis. With available experimental data from scaffolding tests from the past experimental studies and some testing underway, this advanced analysis can be validated. Furthermore, design optimisation will be carried out to investigate possibility in reducing amount of steel bracing needed for the scaffolding systems.
