Research project - Fertilization Trials for Ocean Nourishment
Supervisor: Prof Ian S F Jones
The increasing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is causing global climate change. Engineers are now facing a new challenge on how to reduce the net carbon dioxide with a more efficient and low-costing strategy.
Ocean Nourishment is the concept of purposefully introducing nutrients to the surface ocean to sequester carbon dioxide and increase the sustainable supply of marine protein. The injection of nutrients need to be carefully designed and monitored In order to control the rate of growth of phytoplankton.
The experiment will be conducted in the Tasman Sea using a ship of opportunity.
