Research project - System Reliability-Based Criteria for Designing Steel Structures by Advanced Analysis

Supervisor: Prof Kim Rasmussen
Associate Supervisor: Dr Hao Zhang

Steel structures are designed on a daily basis by structural engineers. Current design method is a two steps procedure which treats the system as a set of independent members such as beams, columns and connections. In order to overcome the limitation of the effective length method of two steps procedure in represent the interaction between the structural system and its members, the advanced analysis by which the limit states strength and stability of the structure can be directly assessed as an integrated system so that separate member capacity checks are not required has been proposed for engineering design.

The project falls within the National Research Priority area No.3: Frontier Technologies for Building and Transforming Australian Industries. The eventual incorporation of the research finding in national standards will provide the scientific framework required to further stimulate innovation in the Australian structural engineering community.
