Research project - Numerical study on the upwelling system in the continental shelf of the Sulu Sea
Supervisor: Prof Ian S F Jones
The Sulu Sea, located between Borneo and the Philippines, is more productive than the adjacent South China Sea. Could we explain it and improve the South China Sea’s fishery?
Upwelling during the monsoon season brings deep nutrient-rich water to the surface and increases the productivity of surface water. By using a three-dimensional baroclinic nonlinear numerical model, the mechanisms of the local winds induced the coastal upwelling is investigated. The predicted upwelling areas by the model will be verified by using MERIS satellite remote sensing images.
