Research project - Advanced analysis for locally unstable steel structures

Australia has secured a leading international position in the production of light gauge steels and steel framed solutions over the last 30 years.

As the demand for and cost of steel increases, there is pressure on industry to produce increasing light structures. Accordingly, the significant trend is the decreasing thickness of structural sections. The inevitable consequence of this trend is that instability of the cross-section is becoming increasingly common. Research is needed to investigate how this effect can be incorporated appropriately in current design method.
