Geo-Environmental Laboratory

The Geo-Environmental Laboratory (GEL) is a major new investment made in 2015 by the School of Civil Engineering of the University of Sydney. The GEL boasts a full suite of Water Retention Curve measurement devices for the study of unsaturated soils, including two Barcelona Cells, a Decagon chilled-mirror psychrometer WP4C, a Decagon Hyprop, as well as a Decagon Aqualab Vapor Sorption Analyser (VSA), the first, and currently only one, in Australia. Hence, GEL is capable of measuring suctions across the full spectrum of water content from saturation to near dryness. The GEL also houses a Micromeritics Porosimeter for characterising the porous network of soils and other porous media, a micro-climate monitoring system and climate-chamber phytotrones, a rheometer and hydraulic and thermal conductivity measurement devices.
