Seminar - Mike Bambach - Thin-Walled Sections with Unstiffened Elements under Stress Gradients

Civil Engineering Lecture Room 3

Abstract

Unstiffened plate elements are commonly used as flanges in plain channels and I-sections. Existing design methods for unstiffened elements with stress gradients are excessively conservative because of the lack of test data.

The project aims to improve the existing knowledge on the behaviour of unstiffened elements and their design methods by providing comprehensive test data for welded and unwelded unstiffened plates. Different design methods will be tried out and compared using reliability analyses.

The new design methods will result in substantial improvements of the economy and reliability of thin-walled steel structures.
