Abstract
The modelling of soil behaviour basically follows the road of modelling the behaviour of solid. The concept of elastic deformation and that of plastic deformation and relevant concepts for describing plastic deformation such as yield surface, flow rule and hardening are found to be applicable to soil. The theoretical framework of critical state soil mechanics is introduced through an analogy of soil behaviour and metal behaviour. Finally, brief discussion of the current research of the Soil Mechanics Group at Sydney University on this topic is also given.
