Abstract

In recent years, suction caisson have emerged as a promising alternative to traditional deep piles in the offshore industry, either for temporary foundations or on a permanent basis. This presentation provides an introduction to this novel concept, and discusses its applications in different offshore projects. It later idenifies various issues involving the use of suction caissons, focusing on the installation in sandy soil.

An experimental program at both 1g and in the centrifuge aiming to investigate these issues will be discussed, and some important findings will be presented.
