Abstract:
Current Australian Standards are unable to predict the bearing capacity of LiteSteel Beams (LSB) before failure by buckling. As a result, the current bearing capacity equation presented in AS/NZS 4600:2005 presents significant inaccuracies when estimating the bearing capacity in all types of loading cases (IOF, EOF, ITF, ETF). Previous studies to redefine the existing equation with new coefficients has only been marginally successful.

The purpose of this study was to generate an equation that not only accurately estimated the bearing capacity of LSB in the IOF loading case, but was also potentially derivable from first principles, that is, was logically consistent and explainable from current theory.
