Abstract:
This project involved the modification of a one metre diameter ring shear device and the associated software. Previous tests using the ring shear device were focused on obtaining residual properties of sand through cyclic testing, so the main aim of the project was to modify the ring shear device to perform continuous monotonic shear testing.
Two tests on different sands (a beach sand containing relatively large crushable particles and a high-silica Sydney sand) were performed. The tests themselves did not display the level of grain-crushing that was expected; however they revealed some key issues with the ring shear device itself and interface testing using a ring shear device.
