The Centre for Future Energy Networks (CFEN)
Focuses on carbon-constrained power and energy networks for Australia’s future.
This is a recent initiative in the School and, to date, it has demonstrated significant potential for growth and collaborative ventures in an area of high national and international significance. The Centre works closely with Government and industry including networks businesses, vendors, the CSIRO and NICTA. The research targets renewable energy systems such as wind and solar. Methods to plan and control such networks are explored and the associated electronics to facilitate energy conversion and integration with the electrical grid.
The Centre of Excellence in Telecommunications (CoE Telecom)
Specializes in a broad area of wireless communication systems, including transmission, adaptive signal processing, protocols, routing, network architectures, network security, location estimation and network traffic modelling.
The research outcomes have wide applications in cellular, sensor and intelligent power networks. The laboratory is engaged in both fundamental and applied research.The activities are focused on providing research support to the telecommunications industry. A wide range of research projects have been undertaken in cooperation with local and international industry.
Computer and Software Engineering (CSE)
Focuses on 5 research sub-strands: computer engineering, computing and audio research, image processing, software engineering and biomedical engineering.
Within these groupings exciting research is being undertaken in the areas of integrated circuit design, reconfigurable computing, FPGA design, neuromorphic engineering, modelling of biological visual and auditory pathways in software and silicon, smart sensors, audio research, augmented and virtual reality (3D) audio, human sound localisation, acoustics of listening spaces, multi-channel (64) loudspeaker playback, video and audio communication over wired and wireless/mobile network, software architecture, distributed components and middleware, real-time systems and performance engineering diverse applications in signals and systems with particular emphasis on image processing, parallel computing, financial engineering and web engineering.
Specialises in research into advanced optical techniques for information systems.
This focuses on fundamental research in areas including microwave photonics, photonic signal processing, Bragg grating design, optical communications, nonlinear optical phenomena, slow light and Bragg grating solitons, optically-controlled phased arrays, optical data conversion, terahertz/gigahertz photonics in communication and radar systems, capsule endoscopy, and biophotonics. The Fibre-optics and Photonics laboratory is involved in collaboration with Defence Science and Technology Group and the Department of Defence. Major funding for the research activities comes from the Australian Research Council, Defence Science and Technology Group, and in collaboration with industry.
