Australian network technology company Sensory Networks, co-founded by Freelancer.com CEO Matt Barrie (BE (Elec) BSc), has been bought by Intel for $US20 million. “I’m happy with the outcome, I think it’s good for the team,” says Matt.
Sensory Networks is an Australian network technology company providing pattern-matching software to enable richer functionality and greater performance in network security applications. Sensory Networks is headquartered in Mountain View, California, and has an R&D office in Sydney, Australia.
For Matt, access to the Sydney alumni network has made all the difference at Sensory Networks and later Freelancer.com. And its impact is something that is appreciated long after graduation.
Sensory Networks’ investors include Allan Aaron (MBA), a venture capitalist who is a member of the Board of Directors. He is one of the two founding partners of Technology Venture Partners, which is a specialist investor in the IT&T sector with over $200m in funds under management. Allan was a founding executive with the Australian Technology Group.
Chief Technology Officer, Dr Geoff Langdale (BA) joined as a Senior Research Scientist in 2006 and led the drive to realign Sensory’s offerings around software pattern matching. He has a Master of Science and PhD from Carnegie Mellon University. Software engineer Matthew Barr (BSc (Hons)), joined the company in 2003.
Three of the four founders of Sensory Networks are now principals at Freelancer including Darren Williams (BSc, PhD), Chief Technology Officer. Darren was the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Technology Officer at Sensory Networks and principal architect and primary driver of Sensory Networks' technology. Prior to co-founding Sensory Networks, Darren lectured in Computer Science at the University of Sydney.
David Harrison (BSc) is Vice President of Engineering at Freelancer.com.au, and has been responsible for leading the engineering team in its design and implementation of the web-scale features that have allowed it to handle the massive growth.
Freelancer.com's management team includes Adam Byrnes (BE (Elec), BSc), International Director and Nikki Parker (BA), Regional Director North America and Oceania.
Speaking at the launch of the University of Sydney Business Alumni Network (BAN), the Vice-Chancellor, Dr Michael Spence, said the alumni community was critical to the University.
"Alumni are enormously important to the life of the University, not only because they are our critical friends, but because they are our advocates in the community," Dr Spence said.
