Student Mentoring Program for International Students

University life offers students many wonderful opportunities and new experiences.  These take many forms: from intellectual inquiries in the lecture rooms and tutorials, through to making new friends and acquaintances, and experiencing the variety of on-campus sports and social clubs.

These possibilities are at once exciting and challenging for all students.    New international students, who have to travel a long way from home to take part in this intellectual adventure, often need a little more guidance in getting settled in their studies and in learning how to join on campus activities.   To lend a helping hand, the School of Electrical and Information Engineering has developed an on-going student mentoring program that pairs up a senior student with a first year international student.    The role of the student mentor is to provide insight and guidance that will allow the new student to thrive and prosper in the new learning and social environment.

The student mentor program is beneficial to both the mentor and the one being mentored - and the School provides mentors with both training and feedback throughout the process.    Many past student mentors and their charges have said that the program contributed to their own personal growth, their social development, and that they considered the experience as one of the highlights of their university life.

If you are a current EIE student and you are interested in being a mentor, please return the mentor registration form to Melissa Yeung, with the subject of “Mentor registration”.

Your personal information will be treated with the strictest confidence.

All new international students commencing in the Bachelor of Engineering program at the School will be automatically assigned a student mentor.
