Flexible Entry to Engineering or IT Degrees.

Registration for Flexible Entry for 2012 UAC main round is now closed.

Note: Flexible Entry registrations can only be processed if an application for admission to an Engineering or IT degree has been lodged with UAC. Flexible Entry is only available to local applicants who are recent school leavers.

If you have any enquiries about the application process, email the faculty at .

What is Flexible Entry?

The Flexible Entry Scheme is available for current HSC applicants whose ATAR may fall up to a maximum of 5 points below the normal cut-off. Equivalent ATAR cut-offs for last year can be seen using the UAC Course Search page. Select the "University of Sydney" as the chosen institution to see details for all Engineering and IT programs.

The Flexible Entry scheme does not replace the normal Universities Admission Centre process and all domestic and international high school students completing an Australian year 12 (onshore or offshore) must still apply through UAC. The Flexible Entry scheme complements this system.

  • For IT degrees (BCST, BCST Advanced, BIT), students can as well submit a portfolio of their work. Visit School of IT Programmers page for details.
  • Flexible Entry does not apply to BE/BDesArch, BE/BCom, BIT/BCom, BE/BMedSc, BIT/BMedSc, BE/LLB or BIT/LLB programs.

How do we assess Flexible Entry?

Special achievements or awards in Mathematics (not General), Physics, Chemistry, Information Technology, Engineering Science, problem solving, leadership in school or the wider community and prior experience in engineering are considered as important indicators that are relevant for entry to various programs.

Students should be looked at holistically; able to show community activity, sport and leadership as well as academic achievement. Employers often seek these attributes in our graduates as these people fit more easily into their workforce and are more productive.

We assess applicants on these broader factors to determine likely success in Engineering and Information Technology degrees.

How do I apply?

Students who want to be considered for Flexible Entry must apply both through UAC and register using the online with the faculty's Flexible Entry registration page. Applications close Thursday 5 January, 2012

All local and international students who have done the local Australian examinations (HSC, AB or equivalent) must apply for a place in the Faculty through UAC. This includes recent school leavers (2009 HSC) and non-recent (previous HSC) or mature age students. Applicants must list UAC codes for the degree or stream they wish to have entry to, in order of highest preference.

If you would like to submit a late application or get information on the status of your main round application please contact us at engineering.undergraduate@sydney.edu.au.

Those students who have been successful in their application will be notified by the University Admissions Center on the 18 January 2012 as part of the main round offers.

If you feel your preferences were incorrect or wish to change your preferences or want further information on your application please feel free to contact us at the above email address. This address is kept open all through the enrolment period. Places in our Flexible First Year program are also kept open. This allows for special late entry cases and offer changes, as we don't believe you should be locked into any hasty choices at the start of your Engineering or IT career.

The earlier you apply the better, it is not necessary to wait for your HSC and UAI results. Early applications gives us a reasonable period to evaluate the applications. We can provide feedback, clarify details and it allows us the opportunity to give advice on the best method of gaining entry to our programs.

How will I find out if my application is successful?

Successful applicants for flexible entry will be notified in the main round of UAC offers in January 2012.
