Civil Engineering is crucial to many aspects of our lives. It involves the planning, design, construction, maintenance and recycling of community facilities and infrastructure - from high-rise buildings, roads, bridges, railways and tunnels to power stations, airports, dams and harbours.
With skills and expertise in areas such as structures and geomechanics, responding to climate change, sustainability, water resources and clean energy, civil engineers tackle society's complex environmental and infrastructure challenges.
We offer undergraduate and postgraduate programs that will equip you with the knowledge and skills to allow you to deal with current and future physical and environmental challenges. Areas of study include construction management, concrete and steel structures, fluids, structural mechanics and dynamics, soil and environmental mechanics, geotechnical engineering, bridge engineering, and water resources, all of which fall under the fundamental disciplines of mathematics, physics and chemistry.
At the undergraduate level, we offer a four-year Bachelor of Engineering Honours (Civil) degree program as well as specialisations in construction management, environmental, geotechnical and structural engineering. A five-year combined degree program incorporating science, commerce, arts, medical science, or law is also available.

Our Centre for Advanced Structural Engineering has one of largest structural engineering laboratories in the southern hemisphere with established theoretical and experimental research strengths in the behaviour of steel and other metal structures, particularly in stability.
The Centre for Geotechnical Research has expertise in the behaviour and design in many types of foundation systems, soil and rock mechanics, and also contaminant flow.
In the area of the Environment Fluids we have facilities and staff researching in the areas of wind engineering, coastal engineering, ocean technology and sustainable ocean resources.
