Message from the President
There is a real theme of collaboration in this edition of SoIT’s news - whether it be sharing ideas through the Research Student Conference, working as a team to solve problems in the ACM Programming Competition or even sharing computing capacity through the Centre for Distributed & High Performance Computing.
The University of Sydney Centre for Distributed & High Performance Computing
The School of IT is pleased to announce the formation of the Centre for Distributed and High Performance Computing. The Centre is a major collaborative effort by staff in the School, and will be headed by Professor Albert Zomaya.
The ACM Programming Competition
In September, IT students, James Constable, Tarek Elgindy, Ben Taylor took out the top prize at the Sydney site of the South Pacific Region of the Association for Computing Machinery 2009 Programming Competition.
Staff profile: Dr Uwe Röhm,Dipl-Inform Passau Dr.sc.techn ETH Zurich
Dr Uwe Röhm is a lead member of the Database Research Group at the School of IT. His research interests lie in data consistency algorithms and the expanding area of data management for Life Sciences, specifically high-throughput DNA sequencing.
Staff News
Congratulations to Jinman Kim on his promotion, and the Faculty of Engineering and IT has undergone a change in leadership.
Student News
The last few months have been busy for IT students. PhD student Ashnil Kumar was awarded the Microsoft Research Asia Fellowship, and several honours and postgraduate students have had papers accepted at the Australasian Language Technology Workshop 2009. In addition, postgraduate students took part in the first Faculty of Engineering and IT Research Student Conference.
