Postgraduate Research Travel Scheme (PRTS)

1. Synopsis

In addition to the Postgraduate Research Support Scheme (PRSS) offered by the HDR Centre the School of Information Technologies offers the Postgraduate Research Travel Scheme (PRTS) to enable research students to attend conferences for presentation of their papers.

The PRTS Fund supports postgraduate research students to travel to conference venues in Australia and Overseas. Funds are made available to Postgraduate Research Students up to a fixed amount depending on the ERA ranking of the conference and the location of the conference. Students have access to PRTS funds as soon as they receive the acceptance letter from the conference program chair.

2. Eligibility criteria / Applicants

  • Must apply for PRSS*
  • Must be enrolled in a research degree at the School of IT at the date of delivery of the acceptance letter
  • Must not exceed four years full time for doctoral students and two years full time for master of philosophy students (part time equivalent)
  • Full (short paper in exceptional cases) must be accepted for the main conference track
  • Presentation format must be oral presentation
  • Conference must be ranked A or B (Core/ERA ranking)

If several postgraduate students have co-authored the conference publication, then only a single student can seek funding for the said conference.

*PRSS applications are only open for certain periods; please make sure to check the PRSS website. In case you missed the deadlines, please contact the School of IT PG Officer.

3. Funding

The date of the acceptance letter determines the year of PRTS funding. The acceptance letter of the program chair has to be verified by the research training director. Satellite events of the conference (e.g. workshops, BoF session, poster session, etc.), which are not ranked by ERA, are not considered for funding. The following amounts are available to postgraduate students (any amounts awarded by PRSS will be deducted):

Conference Ranking

Region 1: local

Region 2: others

Region 3: Europe, Africa, North and South America

To apply for the funding you need to submit the online application form. The application will be assessed by the Research Training Director and you will receive a notification by email.

The PRTS covers expenses for conference travel. Conference travel expenses comprise:

  • Travel/Flight (ground travel such as taxi is not included)
  • Accommodation
  • Conference fees
  • Visa fees

Reimbursement of expenses will only be made upon production of receipts after the costs have occurred. The School cannot provide up-front payments.

Postgraduate research students have to book all airfares through the University Preferred travel provider: . The University of Sydney travel policy requires booking at the lowest logical available rates for accommodation. Students have to provide evidence for booking the best fare if asked for it. Students are required to submit a student travel form before the travel arrangements are made.

There is no provision to carry forward any unused PRTS funds.
