Intelligent algorithms for astronomical source detection (18cp)
Next generation radio telescopes will produce unprecedented quantities of data. Not all of this data can be archived and so images must be analysed in near-real time, extracting weak signals from noisy data.

Of particular interest are 'transient' sources - stars and galaxies that appear and disappear between observations - giving us insight into fundamental physics. This project will develop algorithms for identifying these objects and investigating ways of storing the critical data. The project will require programming skills, knowledge of databases, and good general problem solving skills.
