The Problem
The problem is to take a partially completed crossword (without clues) and finish it using a given word list. These word games are often called “fill-ins”.
The crosswords file which you can download contains some example partially completed crosswords (the unsolved files) and a word list (the words.txt file). The black squares on the crossword are represented with hash (#) symbols, the free squares by asterisks (.) and the already filled in words as uppercase letters. The word list is also all uppercase. Here's an example:
TREE#FERN
.#.##A##O
.#.##S##R
.#...T.#M
##.##E##A
###..R..L
You need to submit the source code to your solution (in any programming language of your choice) and up to 1 page of text describing your solution and the algorithm(s) used. Your solution will be judged on:
- the creativity of the solution;
- the sophistication of the solution/algorithm(s);
- the readability and quality of the code.
