Sumo

Gouki Tsuru, an 11th grade high school student, gave a video and spoken introduction of Japanese Sumo to a group of Junior and High school students in Parry McCluer Gymnasium. He showed a video of the Fukuoka Sumo Basho (tournament) in Japan, he also explained the rankings in Sumo. Gouki and the student he homestayed with, David Irvine then performed Sumo for the students. Gouki wore the traditional Mowashi during the performance and he explained each sumo he was performing.

This presentation is suited to Junior high or high school students and especially for students with an interest in sport in general. Most of the student watching were familiar with American style wrestling so it was novel for them to see Japanese sumo, which is very different, performed and explained to them.
