The laboratory runs a variety of types of projects:
1.Industrial Research are projects funded from agreements withhealth groups or grant bodies. These projects usually have paidsoftware engineers, computational linguists and linguists invarious proportions with supporting students depending on the needs ofthe work.
2. Postgraduate Scholars do projects on specifictopics with the objective of attaining their Doctorate or Masterate. They often help out on other projects or support entries intocompetitive tasks.
3. Honours Research is performed as a projectby an honours student over the course of a year making up 50% of theircourse work. This preparatory work covers a broad topic to establish abackground but the project itself focuses on a narrow task.
4.MIT Projects are done by students enrolled in our MIT degree. They canbe a half semester load for a standard project or a 3/4 semester loadfor a research project. As many students in the MIT degree have anumber of years working experience in their home country theyoften produce very high quality results in their projects.
5.Undergraduate Projects are done in a single semester by a thirdyear or fourth year student sometimes in pairs. The work is highlyfocused and the aim is to produce a working piece of software thatsolves a problem. The work can be on a research topic but often aimsto improve some process that is already well understood or to showthat it can be used in a different manner.
6. Summer Projectsare done over the summer months for 10 weeks. Students apply of ascholarship which are awarded on the basis of their academic record. The scholarship is funded by a specific organisation for a researchproject o be done that advances knowledge in some are of interest tothat organisation. The aim of this programme is to introduce talentedundergraduate students into the research process and to give themfirst hand experience at this type of work.
7. DevelopmentProjects are completed for external organisations on a fee for servicebasis according to a contract drawn up between the University and theorganisation. Postgraduates:
