Sonnet XVIII -- In Response
My memories tonight betray my heart
And conjure images of erstwhile love.
A thousand recollections form in part
Retrieved and manufactured from the trove
Which captive lie within and haunt my mind.
No longer can I tell false love from true
And as I reminisce I frequent find
My faculties providing thoughts of you
Which seem to be a part of former days
But close examination claim these false.
Again I look and see through mem'ry's haze
Such actions true as fill me with remorse.
The histories we share should mirror life
But diff'ring promise nought but untold strife.
