There is no provision for connection of laptops or other portable devices in the School's undergraduate teaching labs.

Undergraduate students are not permitted to connect laptops in those rooms or interfere with network connections in any way.

Honours and postgraduate students requiring to use their laptop in the SIT lab area, should use the University open wifi connection. For more information please see http://www.usyd.edu.au/ict/switch/internet/requirements.shtml.

Staff, postgraduate research students and associates can apply to register a laptop for connection to the School's network. Only registered devices are permitted to be connected. Upon registration each laptop is assigned a static hostname and address, which is served by DHCP.

Eligible users wanting to register their laptop should:

  1. FindTheMACAddress of the NIC (ethernet interface) on your laptop.
  2. eMail your request for laptop registration to the DutyProgrammer (Users on non-undergraduate systems can find out how to contact the duty programmer [WWW]here.) The request should include:
  3. Once you have received the OK from the duty programmer, you will need to ConfigureDHCP on your laptop.
  4. Information on Printer setup is here - PrinterSupport.
  5. Configure your machine to use plain passwords to connect to the server (restart may be required for changes to take effect). See the [WWW]Plain Password Patch for Windows, or OsxMountNetworkDirectory for Mac OS X.
  6. Configure your web browser to use a WebProxy for Internet web access.

Note: Requests from accounts other than School or USyd email accounts will not be processed as it's impossible to verify their authenticity.

The School currently only supports 10/100BaseT connections and does not offer a general wireless service. The University is currently trialling a campus wireless service. You can find out more information about this[WWW]here.
