Clean the Dock after initial Installation/Upgrade

  1. move the mouse slowly over the icons in the "Dock" at the bottom of the screen and, with the mouse, pull undesired items out of it and go through a few more hoops as described
  2. from the right, pull out: "Apple - Mac OS X", "System Preferences"
  3. click onto "QuickTime Player"
    1. in the "QuickTime Player" menu, choose "Preferences…"
    2. uncheck "Show Content Guide automatically"
    3. quit "QuickTime Player" by either choosing "Quit QuickTime Player" from the "QuickTime Player" menu, holding down the mouse button on its icon in the dock and choosing "Quit" from the menu that pops up, or holding the "Command"-key (with the Apple-logo on it) while hitting "Q"
  4. pull the "QuickTime Player" icon out of the dock
  5. verify with the user which other dock applications are unneeded and pull them out (most likely at least "GarageBand", "iPhoto" and "Dashboard", which can be accessed easier via the "F12" function key)
