- in the leftmost pane of the active "Finder" window, click onto the topmost hard drive icon, then navigate to "Library"->"Preferences"
- from the "View" menu, choose "Customize Toolbar…"
- from the pane that drops down, drag the icon labelled "Connect" up into the metallic-looking space and drop it directly left of the text field in the upper right corner of the window with the loupe symbol in it
- click "Done"
- click onto the icon you just dragged into place
- in the active text field, enter "smb://itsmb/mac" and click the little "+" symbol right to it
- in the string you just typed, replace "mac" with the username of the designated user of the machine and again click the little "+" symbol right to it
- double-click onto the first string you created in the lower pane (smb://itsmb/mac)
- for "Name", enter your username and for "Password" your password (if you are not the designated user make sure that the checkbox underneath is not checked)
- if the user logs on with his/her own username and password you can check that box to automate authentication
- in the window that opens now, navigate to "Mac OS X", then "Setup"
- drag the file "com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist" from that latter directory ("mac/Mac OS X/Setup") into the "Preferences" directory navigated to earlier, and drop it there
- if a dialog pops up then confirm overwriting an existing version of the file
- from the "Finder" menu, choose "Preferences…"
- check the checkbox next to "Open new windows in column view"
- click the "Sidebar" tab
- uncheck "iDisk" and "Network"
- click the "Advanced" tab
- select settings to suit your preferences
